Employers are required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) to provide a safe working environment for employees, including the provision of adequate first aid facilities and trained personnel. This act requires employers to assess the risks in the workplace and provide appropriate first aid training to employees to ensure a safe working environment.

Accessing an Advanced Emergency First Aid skills programme in South Africa would support the objectives of the National Development Plan by improving the quality of healthcare services and creating opportunities for skills development and job creation.

Advanced Emergency First Aid Responders provide advanced emergency first aid care to patients in critical or life-threatening situations during an emergency situation

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this skills programme, a learner will be able to:

1. Assist with the coordination and management of first aid providers’ activities on an emergency scene.
2. Provide advanced emergency first aid medical care for a range of medical conditions to patients in critical or life-threatening situations.
3. Provide wound care within advanced emergency first aid scope.
4. Provide life support interventions on the incident scene and through advanced emergency first aid techniques.
5. Handover patient with relevant report on the patient’s condition and treatment.

Programme Content

From this course, learners will be exposed to the overall broad areas so as to master the following tasks:

1. Assessing the hazards and risks at and around an incident scene and take actions to make the area safe for the provisioning of first aid.
2. Taking immediate action to provide first aid care for dealing with life threatening conditions and preserve the life of affected persons.
3. Conducting proper secondary and ongoing assessments of the affected persons at an incident scene and provide appropriate emergency first aid care.
4. Handing over the treated person to the next level of medical care, complete post incident activities, reports and organisationally required documents.
